Police Conduct in Charleston.

Due to the fact Mrs. Jordan knew about the many instances where people were severely injured during protest she expressed her gratitude that they were never touched in Charleston. She said, “In the 1960’s Downtown Charleston had a very nice white police chief.” Each time the police were called when the protestors were picketing and protesting, he always instructed his officer to refrain from attacking the protestors. Though they were not attacked, they usually were taken to jail for a few hours. The protestors outnumbered the police, so they would get picked up and dropped off in the police van that they referred to as the “patty wagon.” During their time in jail, Mrs. Jordan talked about all the freedom songs they would sing, even after being repeatedly told to stop.
